Spherical plain bearings
Sliding bearings for oscillation and misalignment, not rolling bearings.
Availability on inquiry
A spherical plain bearing has a spherical sliding surface. It belongs on linkages, hydraulic ends and other joints that oscillate rather than spin at rolling-bearing speeds. Maintenance-free and steel-on-steel versions are different inquiries.
The family name is easy to confuse with a spherical roller bearing. The inquiry should say “plain” or “sliding” if that is what the drawing shows. Schaeffler publishes spherical plain bearings; this page does not assign every oscillating joint on a ship to that brand.
What to include
- Sliding or rolling. Maintenance-free or relubricated.
- Bore, outside diameter, width and any rod-end thread.
- Angle of oscillation and the environment: salt, wash-down, or dry.
