Engine-room auxiliaries and pumps

Bearings and monitoring points on pumps, purifiers, compressors, fans and generator auxiliaries.

Engine-room buyers usually start from a designation on a nameplate, a drawing, or a failed part. Where the mark is gone, the useful record is the machine, the bearing location, and the boundary dimensions.

Deep groove ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings and angular contact ball bearings turn up often in motors and pumps. Spherical roller bearings and housings turn up where the shaft can deflect. The right type is not decided by the room the machine sits in.

Schaeffler’s OPTIME publication lists pumps, compressors, fans and electric motors among typical monitoring arrangements. That is a manufacturer description of where those sensors are aimed. It is not a statement that a vessel already has them, or that FEX fits them.

What to include

  • Machine maker, model and where the bearing sits.
  • Designation, or bore, outside diameter and width.
  • Speed, duty and the lubricant now in use.
  • Whether the space is a hazardous area.
